How Can We Help?

Are there any cultural customs or etiquette I should be aware of in Costa Rica?
Costa Rica is known for its friendly and welcoming people. Here are a few cultural customs and etiquette tips to help you blend in and show respect:
- Greetings: Costa Ricans are warm and often greet each other with a handshake or a hug, especially among friends and family. A simple “Buenos días” (good morning), “Buenas tardes” (good afternoon), or “Buenas noches” (good evening) is appreciated.
- Punctuality: While punctuality is important, social gatherings may start a bit later than scheduled. For business meetings, it’s best to arrive on time.
- Dining Etiquette: When dining, wait for the host to start eating before you begin. It’s polite to finish everything on your plate. If you can’t finish, it’s acceptable to leave a small amount.
- Personal Space: Costa Ricans tend to stand closer to each other when talking compared to some Western cultures. Don’t be surprised if people stand closer than you’re used to.
- Tipping: Tipping is common in restaurants and for tour guides. A tip of around 10% is generally expected for good service.
- Respect for Elders: Show respect to older people by offering your seat on public transportation and addressing them with courtesy.
